EGF with GHRP-6
Given together into a vein in two randomized Cuban stroke trials; the 188-patient Phase III missed its main goal.

Mechanism overlap · reasoning, not evidence
- EGF
- Protein — Human Growth Factor
- GHRP-6
- Peptide — Growth Hormone Secretagogue (Ghrelin Receptor Agonist)
Reasoning, not evidence: what each is described to do says nothing about what they do together.
What the studies found
Acute ischemic stroke, Phase I/II (Hernández-Bernal et al., 2024)
- What was given — 36 patients aged 18 to 80, within 12 hours of a CT-confirmed ischemic stroke, randomized and open-label: 75 µg EGF with 3.5 mg GHRP-6 (10 patients) or with 5 mg (10), into a vein twice a day for 7 days, or standard care (16).
- What it found — Serious adverse events: 9 of 16 on standard care, against 3 of 10 and 2 of 10 on the two doses; two events in one patient were attributed to the treatment. The authors report better neurological and functional scores at 90 and 180 days, and more survivors at 6 months, with the combination.
- Limits — 36 patients, open-label, with safety as the main endpoint; run by CIGB, the EGF's maker.
Acute ischemic stroke, Phase III (COURAGE-2) (Hernández-Bernal et al., 2026)
- What was given — 188 patients within 12 hours of an ischemic stroke, randomized and open-label: 75 µg EGF with 5 mg GHRP-6 into a vein twice a day for 7 days (95 patients) or standard care (93).
- What it found — It missed its main goal: disability, daily function and survival did not differ across all patients. In a subgroup of 27 with severe strokes, disability at 6 months was lower and fewer died on the combination, which the authors say calls for further study. Severe adverse events: 30 of 95 treated and 18 of 93 on standard care, not a significant difference; none was judged treatment-related.
- Limits — Open-label; the severe-stroke result is from a subgroup of 27.
Both trials come from CIGB, which makes the EGF, and neither was blinded.
